Forecast Evaluation of Small Nested Model Sets
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose two new procedures for comparing the mean squared prediction error (MSPE) of a benchmark model to the MSPEs of a small set of alternative models that nest the benchmark. Our procedures compare the benchmark to all the alternative models simultaneously rather than sequentially, and do not require bootstrapping. Both procedures adjust MSPE differences in accordance with Clark and West (2007); one procedure then examines the maximum t-statistic, the other computes a chi-squared statistic. Our simulations examine the proposed procedures and two existing procedures that do not adjust the MSPE differences: a chi-squared statistic, and White’s (2000) reality check. In these simulations, the two statistics that adjust MSPE differences have most accurate size, and the procedure that looks at the maximum t-statistic has best power. We illustrate our procedures by comparing forecasts of different models for U.S. inflation.

Nested Forecast Model Comparisons: A New Approach to Testing Equal Accuracy
This paper develops bootstrap methods for testing whether, in a finite sample, competing out-of-sample forecasts from nested models are equally accurate. Most prior work on forecast tests for nested models has focused on a null hypothesis of equal accuracy in population — basically, whether coefficients on the extra variables in the larger, nesting model are zero. We instead use an asymptotic a...
متن کاملForecasting Dutch GDP and inflation using Alternative Factor Model Specifications based on Large and Small Datasets
We compare the factor forecasting performance of nested specifications of the generalized factor model based on various configurations of a large macroeconomic data set. The forecast simulation design involves in-sample model selection, factor estimation, parameter estimation and, finally, generating factor forecasts and factor augmented autoregressive forecasts. In order to empirically determi...
متن کاملStratospheric age of air computed with trajectories based on various 3D-Var and 4D-Var data sets
The age of stratospheric air is computed with a trajectory model, using ECMWF ERA-40 3D-Var and operational 4D-Var winds. Analysis as well as forecast data are used. In the latter case successive forecast segments are put together to get a time series of the wind fields. This is done for different forecast segment lengths. The sensitivity of the computed age to the forecast segment length and a...

Despite The Important Role That Management Profit Forecasting Plays In The Decision Making Of Capital Market Actors, These Predictions Appear To Be Biased. In The Attempt To Measure The Bias Of Predicting Profit Management, Numerous One- Dimensional Measurement Tools Have Been Proposed In The Accounting And Finance Literature. Despite These Efforts, No Comprehensive Composite Index Has Been Dev...
متن کاملThe meteorological model RAMS at Crati Scrl
At Crati Scrl an operational version of RAMS 4.3 (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) was implemented in January 2001. This paper aims to give a first assessment of model performances for quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF). In essence, the effects of enhanced horizontal grid resolution over Calabria, using a 6 km spacing domain nested in a 30 km resolution parent grid, is studied. To c...
